Nail the Plan, Not Just the Numbers

I am ... Nearing Retirement

When you picture retirement – or even search for it online – you may see sandy beaches. Cruises. Golf. Books you’ve put off reading. Fun times with friends and family. It’s true: In retirement, you can pursue many things that you’ve been waiting to do.

But retirement is a significant life change, and we find that many clients are not ready for some of the downsides of retirement.

You’ve worked for decades, and that job has been a large part of your identity. While some may ease right in, many people struggle with the internal transition to find a new purpose. Managing retirement finances is important, but our conversations with soon-to-be or new retirees are also focused on what you are passionate about.

Finding a new purpose

We’re not social workers or psychologists, but we do work with many people, and we have experienced firsthand their struggles of moving away from the daily grind. So, how do you fill the hours you now have? For some, it’s spending more time with family. For others, it’s volunteering or even keeping a part-time job – not because they need the money, but because they enjoy sharing their knowledge, interacting with a team, and helping others.

In our experience, the happiest clients are those who regularly give back or invest their time in something meaningful to them. We simply help explore what matters to you. And, of course, we help you make sure you can fund whatever that is.

In retirement, a comprehensive financial plan is even more important so you can truly enjoy your newfound flexibility. When we meet, we’ll talk about all areas of financial well-being.

Can I pay for that?

One of the most common questions we get from new retirees is how much they can spend on themselves or give to loved ones or charities while making sure they have enough to live on. Here are our thoughts on that:

During our meeting, we’ll identify the right accounts you should use as well. Sometimes it’s better to draw from a retirement account rather than a taxable savings account. We’ll also help you manage taxes, which can be tricky. We’ll simplify complex concepts like Required Minimum Distributions, which is the government’s way of saying “It's time to use that retirement savings you’ve accumulated.”
